Steam trains used to dominate the tracks. These vessels got their power through steam fueled by burning combustible material. That material was usually coal or wood. First produced in the United Kingdom at the beginning of the 1800s, they were popular until the 1950s when diesel engines eventually took over. You can still find them today in some parts of the world, though, and they're a beautiful sight as the smoke rolls out of them as they sail down the tracks.
